John White, Smith Dave & Gavin Bryars
John White ALBUS LIBER I & II

£30.00

Issues 8 & 9 of the Journal (only for sale together) are devoted to the contemporary English composer John White. With an introduction by Gavin Bryars (now a satrap of the Collège de ’Pataphysique), issue 8 consists of an encyclopædia of White’s oeuvre by Dave Smith. Its entries detail his huge output in every known and unknown genre of music, his record-breaking number of piano sonatas (176 at publication), his collaborations with Cornelius Cardew, Bryars and John Tilbury, and with orchestras (The Scratch Orchestra, Instant Dismissal Orchestra, Farewell Symphony Orchestra) and his experimentalism (“Machines” and system music). To reiterate: “All is ’Pataphysics”. Indeed. But in White’s work we see it particularly in his refusal to differentiate between serious and humorous works, or to accept that any of it has to do with “expression”. Instead, navigation, in the Faustrollian sense, defines its elaboration, and there is no reason why one should not compose musical explorations of tea-trolley dancing, escort agency phone numbers or Susan Hampshire’s feet.
