ARTICLES & POLEMICS

We add here some editorial matter related to the authors or topics that we publish.

1. MARCEL DUCHAMP WAS NOT A THIEF, from The Burlington Magazine, December 2019, by Dawn Ades and Alastair Brotchie. Claims that Duchamp stole “Fountain” from Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven are reduced to provable facts in order to demonstrate that these claims are both wrong and dishonest.

2. MARCEL DUCHAMP AND THE BARONESS. Two letters from Dawn Ades and Alastair Brotchie published in The Art Newspaper in February and April 2020. These letters pursue the argument of 1 above, with responses by Julian Spalding and Glyn Thompson, and replies to those responses. The “controversy” is reduced to two simple questions which prove definitively that the Baroness played no role in “Fountain”.

3. DUCHAMP AND THE BARONESS: END OF THE “FOUNTAIN” AFFAIR. The final letters published in The Burlington Magazine and Art Newspaper in 2021.The controversy is brought to a conclusion, since its promoters, Julian Spalding and Glyn Thompson, and Irene Gammel have refused to meaningfully engage with criticism or provide any meaningful evidence linking the Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven with Fountain.
