Henri Beauclair,  Gabriel Vicaire & Stanley Chapman

Translated by Stanley Chapman, with an afterword by Paul Edwards.

This collection of Decadent poems, prefaced by a detailed “Life of the Poet”, was published originally in 1885 by Vanier, the great publisher of Symbolist and Decadent poetry. It quickly became apparent that it was in fact a literary hoax and the confection of the two minor poets Henri Beauclair and Gabriel Vicaire. The book soon garnered a reputation for the quality of its parody, for successfully hoodwinking some critics and for entertaining those in on the joke, and is today recognised both as one of the greatest exemplars of hoax writing that transcended the realm of simple satire, and as a key work for all those interested in the fin de siècle literature of the 1890s.
