Ray Galton & Alan Simpson
THE REBEL

£15.00

New Year’s Eve 130 (September 2002v.) was marked by the opening of a large posthumous retrospective of the paintings and sculpture of Anthony Hancock at The Foundry in Shoreditch, East London. The paintings and sculpture were reconstructed for the occasion by members of the London Instutute, and are reproduced here in colour. This was the first substantial public event mounted by the Institute, and its anniversary was reason enough for us to rummage through the archives and retrieve this shooting script for The Rebel, which includes scenes edited out of the finished film, and was presented to the LIP by its authors Ray Galton and Alan Simpson. It possesses many pataphysical virtues which are amply embodied in the protagonist’s phlegmatic amenability allied to his more deep-rooted scepticism: a combination of the superficial and the profound which appears to be the creation equally of his own cheerfully pessimistic character and the inventiveness of Galton and Simpson. ’Pataphysics is imperturbable, and it seems to us that Hancock personifies a certain sort of pataphysical “solution” to everyday life. This is the only published version of this filmscript.
