The Brothers Quay, Heinrich Holtzmüller & Alfred Jarry
THE BROTHERS QUAY

£16.50

This issue of the Journal is dedicated to the film-makers The Brothers Quay, and explores their works through certain of their more peripheral interests, namely calligraphy and marionettes. Following a series of photographs of Atelier Koninck, the film studio which they are leaving after three decades, the principal text in this issue is a reprise — expanded, embellished, and with its specifically pataphysical aspects disocculted — of the Quays’ interview with a sixteenth-century calligrapher, Heinrich Holtzmüller. (An earlier version of this text appeared in the Moma New York catalogue of their retrospective exhibition in 2012-13.) Here the interview is followed by what is probably the first publication of Holtzmüller’s only book, Liber Perutilis, a rather unusual manual of calligraphy dating from 1553 (and printed from the only known copy of it). A final section picks up the connections between Alfred Jarry’s and the Quays’ shared enthusiasm for marionettes, and especially for the Théâtre de Toone in Brussels. Jarry’s extant writings on marionettes are translated for the first time, including a lecture given in Brussels containing extracts from plays by Roswitha, Grabbe, Franc-Nohain, Ranson and Jarry himself. With a Disquisition on The Exterminating Angel by Gilles Firmin tipped in.
