Emmanuel Rhoïdis
POPE JOAN, A HISTORICAL STUDY

£12.00

“’Pataphysics is the science of imaginary solutions…” (cf. Jarry’s definition) but perhaps its highest art is history, and the zenith of this art is without doubt theological or ecclesiastical history: a vast and elaborate edifice constructed on foundations from which cement and water have been purposely omitted. Rhoïdis’s marvellous novel Pope Joan (translated into English by Lawrence Durrell, and into French by Alfred Jarry and Dr. Jean Saltas), was originally prefaced with an extensive “Historical Study” that laid out the evidence for Joan’s existence. This issue of the Journal contains the first complete English translation of this text (the previous translation put various of its parts — the most interesting, naturally — into Latin, or omitted them altogether). An introduction considers the meanings, both pataphysical and vulgar, of the celebrated “chaise percée”, illustrated with popes and other beasts from Jarry’s L’Ymagier.
