ON PATAPHYSICAL EQUIVALENCE

£18.00

This issue of the Journal presents texts and other pieces exploring “the delicate problem of Pataphysical Equivalence”. Whereas “indiscrimination” is a commonplace in contemporary aesthetics, ’Pataphysics radically, and scientifically, extends this principle in all fields by substituting for opposites, and all the other symptoms of mental lassitude: equivalence. A procedure that is not unproblematic. In what way does it steal up to notions of identity or of the exceptional (with which the Science declares itself to be concerned)? Likewise, to utility, or to taxonomy and classification? And not to mention recurrence, reductionism (in its strictest scientific meaning), translation, games and mountain-climbing? So essential, indeed, was it to clarify such matters that this issue of the Journal was produced in collaboration with the Collège de ’Pataphysique. Texts etc. by the editors and by Henri Bergson, Peter Blegvad, Adam Dant, Marcel Duchamp, Charles Fort, Roberto Fortunata, Bruce Gilchrist & Jo Joelson, Magnus Irvin, Alfred Jarry, Michel Leiris, Sally O’Reilly, Tanya Peixoto, Bonaventure des Périers, Dr. Irénée-Louis Sandomir, Vasco Tartuca, Julien Torma and Jan Westerhoff, among others. One of the central tenets of the Science, this issue is an essential contribution both to its understanding and elaboration.
